A Little Bit About Our Growing Practices....
While we are not certified as organic, we do believe in sustainability for future generations and providing healthy, safe food. Our family takes great care in keeping our waterways and soil healthy for years to come.
We use cover crops and compost to keep organic matter in our soils and row covers and greenhouses to protect our crops and keep pests at bay.
We never use genetically modified seed. GMO seed has actually caused resistance to pesticides, thus creating a need for farmers to actually use more sprays than would otherwise be necessary. We also feel they are a serious threat to public health.
We never use anything systemic. This means that nothing used to control disease or insects on our farm is ever taken up by the plants via the root system, thus being eaten after harvest. In fact, we have been known to ban sales reps touting the use of systemic chemicals from our farm! Instead, we use only products that are applied externally and degrade into harmless components within 24 hours. An example would be the use of organic copper products to control blight and mildews on tomatoes and vine crops.
Our waterways are kept clean and nothing is ever added to those waterways.
We irrigate our field crops from several ponds located on our farm and our greenhouse crops are irrigated with well water which is naturally sourced from the waterways on our farm.
A word about fertilizers.....
There are plenty of 'organic' fertilizers on the market today as well as 'conventional' fertilizers. Whether a fertilizer is organic or not depends only on how it is sourced. (See our blog article here.)
Much of today's organic fertilizer is sourced from chicken manure. We do not use chicken manure on our crops. Instead, by understanding plant nutrition and the many complex bio-chemical processes that a plant naturally goes through during its life cycle, we are able to incorporate individual mineral elements as needed to enhance growth and produce development to ensure the produce we offer our customers is healthy and full of nutrition. Many customers remark at how flavorful and how long our produce remains fresh in their refrigerators at home. This is because our produce is harvested daily and we have a great nutrition program, which boils down to better nutrition for you, the consumer, as well. Have you ever seen an apple with dimpled skin? This occurs because of a lack of nutrition.
